SHOULDER SLEEVE INSIGNIA OF THE V CORPS

This article originally appeared in the March-April 1954 issue of the Trading Post. It has been reformatted for the web site and color drawings replace the original black and white ones.

The insignia of the V Corps has always been a pentagon subdivided into five triangles, the pentagon being white and the triangles, blue. During World war I and probably in the early part of the period following the war, the colors of the inner triangles varied considerably, usually being that of the arm of service of the wearer. There is little information available concerning World War I V Corps insignia, but what is known is presented here. If you can add to this material, please do so.

The insignia illustrated here has been drawn accurately. However, as actually manufactured during World War I, this insignia will vary considerably in shape and size. With the information that ia available it is impossible to begin to list all variations for each design, and accordingly only one example for each known type is shown here.

The December 1919 “National Geographic” magazine illustrates the insignia as being a brown pentagon with white triangle, but as far as known, no such insignia has ever been found by collectors. A question exists in the minds of collectors that possibly the colors as shown in that magazine are in error.
