ASMIC member Paul Stevens
has taken his long-term personal interest and done a magnificent job
of cataloging memorabilia of the short-lived U.S Army Tank Destroyer
Forces of WW II. The book is titled "Pictorial Guide to US Anti-Tank
and Tank Destroyer Memorabilia". TD collectibles has become one of
the hotter collecting fields in the military memorabilia market.
I know that he has agonized over quite some time in securing this
material in an easy to read and comprehensive book. He has relied on
the assistance of many other TD collectors – myself included - in
assembling these images. This is the best TD insignia book on the
market today, and probably for years to come. It will be cited by
any other author who may follow. This is laid out for both the
novice and advanced collector. There is TD history, a list of
abbreviations, and then there are the images.
The color images are, simply put, stunning and detailed. Everything
any collector of US Army Tank Destroyer Forces may be interested in
is in this book; it would be an outstanding reference for both
novice and experienced collectors. All the different collecting
categories –SSIs, DIs, souvenirs, china, paper ephemera, are nicely
broken down into easily-understood sub-categories.
SSIs are quite extensively cataloged – variations, modifications,
Camp Hood, twill, theater-made, Disney designs. DIs and collar brass
include HM information, and the latter include period photographic
evidence. Fakes and reproductions are indicated as such.
There are simple and direct explanations of the image categories as
they are presented. Identifications and hallmarks go hand in hand
with the metal insignia.
Souvenirs run the gamut between pennants to ladies’ items; ephemera
includes little known letterhead and holiday cards.
The holidays are coming up, so you might as well get yourself
something that you want because you all know your families won’t!
The book is 84 pages, nearly all of them (except for the obvious –
table of contents, acknowledgements) IN COLOR and each page is full
of insignia. The list price is $25.00, plus postage, and may be
ordered after September 1st, 2008, by contacting the author at:
td_researcher@yahoo.com. Paul will be at the upcoming ASMIC
National Military Insignia Show at the Drawbridge Hotel in Ft.
Mitchell, KY (across the Ohio from Cincinatti) Aug 29-30th. He
will attend and have the books on sale for a show price of $22.00.
